Recycling at the University of Michigan (U-M) began on a campus-wide scale in 1989. Prior to that, only small scale volunteer efforts dating back to the 1970s were in place. In 1990, the recycling operation was completely integrated with U-M Grounds and Waste Management Services on campus.

This section presents some of the recycling efforts underway in U-M teaching and research laboratories. New waste minimization and pollution prevention initiatives will be added to this section as they are developed and successfully implemented.
